Community Corner: Drogheda Homeless Aid

Drogheda Homeless Aid aims to restore dignity and hope by providing care, support, and shelter for homeless men and encouraging self-development, independent living, and resettlement. We have a hostel where we cater for 30 residents at any one time, with 180 men typically staying in the hostel each year. We provide accommodation, three hot meals per day, toiletries and laundry facilities for homeless people referred to us from both Meath & Louth.

In addition to our housing and support services (listed below), Drogheda Homeless Aid runs the Drogheda Meals on Wheels (MOW)  Service. This service is available for the elderly of Drogheda, anyone with special needs, disability,  illness, or need. The MOW supports elderly people and marginalised people at risk of poverty in the Drogheda area through Meals on Wheels and food parcel service.

The meals are delivered 3 days per week, Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Clients receive a main meal and a small dessert. At present, we cater for 68 clients a week. Meals are delivered 52 weeks a year including Easter and Christmas Day. Approximately 650 meals are prepared for residents and older/marginalised people each week in the fully equipped kitchen by our staff. In 2023, 30.520 hot meals were prepared for and provided to homeless people and those living in poverty in the community. We offer approximately 195 hot meals per week for elderly and vulnerable members of our community.

We also provide hot meals at the door for members of the community who present and request to avail of the meals. We provide ambient food parcels for community members who struggle and need extra support meeting household needs.

“We have worked with FoodCloud for 8 years. The food provided through the Department of Social Protection’s  ESF+ program and the FoodCloud surplus food we receive from Dunnes, Meade Farm and Tesco collections greatly benefit our service and help us to provide for our clients and the people in our community. The FoodCloud donations help with reducing the overall cost of the food we cook and provide for our clients.”

We offer a range of key support services to help clients continue on their journey of self-development and independent living beyond the core homeless accommodation service. These include;

  • A step-down/transitional housing and longer-term houses for formerly homeless clients facilitate their reintegration into the local community by helping clients engage with relevant services to support them in their journey towards self-development, independent living, and resettlement.
  • Five long-term houses and seven transitional houses which we deliver as a registered Housing Association.
  • A social housing service as well as prevention/tenancy, sustainment/home visiting, and support: Our provision of support and advice services are available for all residents who are helped in exiting homelessness as well as those availing of tenancy sustainment support.
  • We also provide a tenancy sustainment programme whereby former clients/residents and others at potential risk of losing their homes are supported through home visits.
