Our FoodCloud Kitchen went down a treat at the hugely popular Bord Bia Bloom festival, in Dublin’s Phoenix Park, recently. The FoodCloud Kitchen is Ireland’s first zero-waste food truck and allows us to take our core work of rescuing surplus food to the road, helping us to share our vision of a world where no good food goes to waste.
The delicious dishes served by the FoodCloud Kitchen are prepared with rescued produce, allowing diners to see just how tasty having a positive social and environmental impact can be. The food truck can be booked for a wide range of events and occasions like corporate sustainability days, store openings, team building days, launch events and office parties.
We were delighted with the feedback we received from hungry Bloom attendees who sampled our wares at Bloom’s Funky Food Village over the June bank holiday weekend. The menu was tailored according to the surplus available and visitors enjoyed the likes of our Buddha Bowl with squash, red cabbage slaw, roasted peppers and mango dressing. (And apparently our cookies are the ‘best ever’!).
Over 100,000 people attended the five day event. We were heartened to see how interested people were in the work we do at FoodCloud to connect businesses that have surplus food to those who need it. A number of speaking opportunities during the festival allowed us to talk about this in more detail and outline why the world urgently needs to stem the tide on food waste and food insecurity - two of the biggest issues facing humanity today.
The FoodCloud team kicked into action and with the help of some wonderful volunteers (shout out to South Dublin Community Volunteer Corp) we collected surplus food from exhibitors and brought it to our warehouse for distribution to our agencies. We rescued two vans of beautiful Irish produce, totalling 505.2kgs in weight, the equivalent of 1,202 meals redistributed and the equivalent of approximately 1,616 Co2 emissions avoided.
This surplus food, which would otherwise have gone to waste, supported 28 of our voluntary and charity partners.
Booking the FoodCloud Kitchen for an event allows you to play your part in reducing food waste, positively impacting the environment and bringing us a step closer to a much needed sustainable food future. All of the proceeds raised by the FoodCloud Kitchen go back to supporting our core activity of redistributing surplus food to communities across Ireland. There’s no time - or food - to waste!
